A few years ago, doctors got their evenings back.
Not from a breakthrough in medicine — from a breakthrough in paperwork. Ambient scribes sit in on the consult, listen, and hand the clinician a drafted note before the next patient is in the room. The clinician reads it, corrects it, signs it. The judgement never left the professional; only the typing did.
It worked because the burnout was never the medicine. It was the documentation. And it has scaled past the point of argument: ambient scribes now capture millions of consults a week, and the category's leading companies are worth hundreds of millions of dollars. That's market proof, not our proof — but it settles the question of whether the pattern works.
The pattern, in three parts
Strip the medicine out and the scribe pattern is simple:
- Capture in the moment. The work is recorded while it happens, not reconstructed afterwards.
- A structured draft. The recording becomes a document shaped like the one the professional was going to write anyway.
- The professional signs. The draft is reviewed, corrected and owned by a named person. The machine never becomes the author.
The pattern automates documentation and refuses to automate judgement. That refusal is why it was adopted by one of the most liability-conscious professions on earth.
Our bet: the site walk is the same shape
Now look at a condition survey, a fire-safety walk, an architect's site visit, a trade quoting a job. The same structure is sitting there: a short, expert visit that generates hours of after-hours documentation. The expertise is in the walk; the evenings go to reconstructing it.
Worth being straight about what kind of claim that is. The scribe pattern is proven in medicine; on site work it's a hypothesis — ours. Nobody has settled it yet, and this essay is our reasons for believing it, not a report on something already done.
Part of why we believe it is that a site walk is a harder capture problem than a consult, in ways a purpose-built tool can actually own:
- The evidence is visual. A consult is words; a walk is what you saw. A scribe for site work has to see, not just hear.
- You're moving. Through rooms, floors, scaffolds. Context changes every few seconds, and the record has to keep up.
- Your hands are full. Torch, ladder, probe, gloves. Capture has to survive being rough.
- The room is loud. Site noise is not a quiet consulting room.
That's why we don't think the answer is a dictation app pointed at a building. The scribe for the built world has to treat the footage and the narration as one thing — what you saw and what you said about it, together.
The shape transplants; the details don't
"Fits every profession" is exactly the kind of line worth being suspicious of, so here's the nuance we're building around. Each profession documents differently: a condition surveyor's baseline is a room-by-room record, a fire-safety walk is organised measure by measure, an architect's visit ends in a defect list and instructions, a trade's walk-through ends in a quote. The pattern's second step — a draft shaped like the document you were going to write anyway — only holds if the draft knows which document that is.
So the AI behind Sully isn't one generic summariser wearing a different logo per industry. The draft is built from a template for your kind of work — its structure, its language, its action items — and tuning that per profession is part of how the product is made, not an afterthought. Where a profession's nuances run deeper than a template, that's ours to prove out, one profession at a time.
What stays yours
Sully takes the pattern whole, including the part that makes it trustworthy: the draft is never sign-ready. You review it, you correct it, you sign it. Every line shows the frame and the words it came from, so checking the draft is fast and honest.
Clinicians handed the note-taking to the machine and kept the medicine. There's no reason the people who document the built world should keep typing.
